1 Kings Chapter 3
8/31/2024

Background:

1 Kings Chapter 3 records the event of King Solomon offering sacrifices at Gibeon and asking God for wisdom. Solomon had just inherited the throne and faced the significant task of ruling Israel. He chose to offer sacrifices at the high place in Gibeon because there was a great altar there. At that time, the Israelites were still sacrificing at high places because the temple of the Lord had not yet been built.

Key Points:
Solomon''s Request:
  1. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings to God at Gibeon. God appeared to him in a dream and asked what he wanted. Solomon humbly acknowledged his youth and lack of experience in governing the nation, so he asked God to grant him wisdom to discern between right and wrong, in order to govern Israel justly.

Solomon humbly acknowledged his youth and lack of experience in governing the nation, so he asked God to grant him wisdom to discern between right and wrong, in order to govern Israel justly.
  2. God''s Response:
God was pleased with Solomon''s request. He not only granted Solomon wisdom but also gave him wealth and honor that he didn''t ask for, making him excel among all nations.
  3. Demonstration of Wisdom:
Solomon''s wisdom was quickly demonstrated in a famous case: two women claiming to be the mother of a living child. Solomon proposed cutting the child in half, thereby testing who the real mother was, as the true mother would rather give up the child than see it killed. This judgment caused all Israel to fear Solomon, as it showed he possessed wisdom from God.

This chapter emphasizes that Solomon''s wisdom was a gift from God and demonstrates his initial success in governing the nation.
